CleanUp Technologies :: LPG

If the diesel engine is removed from the donor vehicle (such as a taxi) and replaced by a brand new engine with LPG / petrol bi-fuel operation, significantly improved emissions can be obtained when compared with the original (old) diesel engine. LPG in the U.K. is mainly comprised of propane. For an original light-duty diesel engine meeting Euro 1 specifications, there is the potential for overall emissions reductions of around 85% nitrogen oxide and 90% particulates if a Euro 3 petrol / LPG performance is obtained. The engine will also be substantially quieter in operation.

If the petrol tank is reduced to 15 litres capacity, the vehicle is classified as dedicated to gas operation and attracts lower Vehicle Excise Duty. Dedicated gas designs are now more practical due to the rapidly increasing number of LPG outlets in the U.K. - now approaching 1,000 in total (some 9% of total filling stations).

It is also possible (though more expensive) to convert an existing diesel engine to LPG operation.
