Level 3
Introduction
NVQs (SVQs in Scotland) are practical work-based qualifications that are recognised by employers throughout the UK. They are awarded to people who have proved their skill, knowledge and understanding of all aspects of their job. This means these qualifications will show any employer that you are good at your job. RHDTC have developed a range of NVQ/SVQs for the road freight industry. They cover the main jobs in the industry including driving, warehouse work and traffic office duties. A fact sheet is available for each NVQ/SVQ.

The qualification - Performing Road Haulage & Distribution Operations
This is a Level 3 qualification for team leaders, supervisors and others who are responsible for the day-to-day organisation of goods collection, storage and delivery. The job is important and complex and you will be assessed on your knowledge and understanding of all the elements involved. To achieve a full award you have to complete 5 mandatory units plus 2 optional units. The mandatory units include showing competency in areas such as managing yourself, working effectively with colleagues and customers, managing information and health & safety. The optional units cover areas such as your ability to organise others at work and organise the efficient movement of goods and materials. A full list of the optional units and their elements can be found overleaf. You are encouraged to achieve as many optional units as you can, not just the minimum number of units required for a full award.

Assessments for this qualification are carried out in the work place by a trained assessor who may be from your organisation or from outside. You are assessed at how well you carry out the elements in each unit in your work place and may also be required to give verbal or written answers. These are not like traditional exams and you can work at a pace that suits you and your employer, but they are demanding. When you have been assessed on all the necessary units you qualify for the full award and will receive your NVQ or SVQ certificate awarded by City & Guilds, Edexcel, SQA, OCR, etc
